Welcome to

UERJ’s Postgraduate Programme in History

PPGHistory

research and teaching since 1995

The Graduate programme in History (PPGH) at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) began in August 1995, with the creation of the masters, followed by the creation of the doctorate in 2004. Although they were designed as different levels, each course presenting its own objectives, they meet in terms of teaching and research. The field of focus in Political History is understood as a specific field of historical knowledge and is a central reference for the studies and research developed in the Programme.

The course covers two Research Areasand is dedicated to diverse historiographic perspectives, observing the field of study of each supervisor that make up the different research groups affiliated to the Programme.

With a score of 5 in the Capes assessment since 2014, and receiving funding from FAPERJ, Capes, and CNPq, PPGH now completes 26 years of relevant contribution to the academic community in Rio de Janeiro.

Those interested in preparing themselves for the next selection process can access the selection process document , and also find out more via the programme’s secretary, via email ppghist@gmail.com or via telephone, (21)2334-0678 – ext. no. 22.

Generally, 40 places are offered: 25 on the master’s degree and 15 on the PhD programme. The number of places, however, can be changed according to the Programme’s needs. In addition, the Programme is duly adjusted to the Law 6.914/2014, that established the affirmative action policies in graduate courses.

The democratisation of knowledge, the integration of the graduate programme with the undergraduate programme, and the complementary profile of the work of staff and students are fundamental objectives of the programme, that significantly promote research, teaching and out-reach carried out within the programme. In this way, PPGH promotes academic activities like seminars, symposiums, conferences, and debates that happen both on-site and remotely. The activities carried out are innovative experiences made possible by the exchange of ideas and thematic and methodological suggestions. Together, such actions, act in complementary student education and the circulation of the research carried out nationally and internationally, hoping to attract an external public interested in the historical knowledge produced to the university.
